Salma Al-MusharafyElectrochemical and Spectroelectrochemical Studies of 2,2´-Bipyridine Derivatives as Coordination Ligands with Transition Metals

My Project

My PhD project was funded by the Ministry of Higher Education in the Sultanate of Oman. I did my PhD with the Yellowlees group working on three types of bpy (bpy = 2,2´-bipyridine) molecules; 5,5´-(X)2-bpy (X = Br, Ph, CO2CH2CH3 or CO2CH3), chloro-substituted bpys (5,5´-Cl2-bpy, 6,6´-Cl2-bpy (Fig. 1) and 4-Cl-bpy) and nitro-substituted bpys (4-NO2-4´-Cl-bpy, 4,4´-(NO2)2-4,4´-Cl2-bpy, 2-Cl-4-NO2-py and 4,4´-(NO2)2-bpy). The Pt(II) complexes of these ligands were also studied.

Fig. 1 - Cyclic voltammogram of 6,6´-Cl2-bpy in 0.1 M [TBA][BF4]/DMF, vs. Ag/AgCl, at 293 K and 233 K (purple and black traces respectively)

The nature of the solvent was found to have an effect on the redox potential of some ligands. This was attributed to solvation effects which lead to stabilization of the charged regions of the mono- and di-reduced species by acidic solvents.

A triplet spectrum was observed in the EPR spectrum of a frozen solution of the di-reduced species of 4,4´-(NO2)2-bpy (Fig. 2).

About Me

I was born and raised in Sur, Oman, an Arab country in southwest Asia on the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It borders the United Arab Emirates on the northwest, Saudi Arabia on the west and Yemen on the southwest.

I did my B.Sc at Sur College in Chemistry/Biologywith Education and worked for nearly a year as a demonstrator in the Science Department. I received a full scholarship from the Ministry of Higher Education to study chemistry, and thus came to Edinburgh. In Scotland I got to know and explore a new and different culture and also enjoyed my time over there getting to know some very friendly people who I’m still in contact with.

I came back home in 2006 and started teaching Chemistry at Sur College. I was awarded my Ph.D. officially in 2007 and my title changed “Assistant Professor”. I was the head of the Chemistry unit for nearly two years.

What I´m doing now

The science department has vanished as a result of converting the educational colleges into applied sciences colleges. Therefore, my main mission is to bring back science to these colleges. I’m working as a member of a committee to introduce the new specialization of “Marine Biotechnology”. I’m also a member of the Quality assurance committee at the college.
